History of Italian Cricket: Golden Duck

History of Italian Cricket:

The original cricket played in this fine country was played by English settlers in the 19th Century. In fact, a good few of the household name football clubs in Italy’s Serie A were founded as Football & Cricket clubs. Most notable of these is Genoa 1893 CFC (the first C standing for cricket!), whose cricket section was revived in 2006 by a group of fans.
Italy cricket is enjoying probably the most successful period of it’s long history, with the national team holding it’s own against full associate opposition, and three established senior league and a women’s competition (not to mention several junior age group competitions and international activity).
The national side’s finest achievment on the world stage came in 2012, where they went toe-to-toe with heavyweight associate nations such as Ireland, Netherlands, and Afghanistan in the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier, staged in the UAE. A finishing position of 10th was more than respectable, considering this was unchartered territory for many of Italy’s players.

CLUBS:
Cricket is played at all levels of seriousness in Italy. There are over 80 registered clubs, who play a mixture of social and competitive cricket. Tours to this nation from elsewhere in Erope are becoming frequent. So there will definitely be a willing team to take you on should you decide on a trip to the Azzuri.
Below are a few example Italian clubs:

Roma Capanelle CC

Genoa 1983 CFC

Genoa used to be an Italian powerhouse of cricket. It is a little known fact that many of the great Italian football clubs of today were originally dual code clubs…..that other code being cricket!

Milan Kingsgrove

Kingsgrove CC have a strong playing reputation, competing in Italy’s Serie A League. We are past champions of our country’s national competition, and have claimed silverware in many cup competitions too. In 2012, we were privileged to host the world famous Marylebone Cricket Club- details of this match can be found at the Golden Duck Cricket Blog….Italy’s premier blog for cricket topics.
On top of having our formidable men’s side, an equally successful Female team is also run, playing matches throughout the year. In 2012, they outdid their male counterparts by one place in the league, meaning they were Champions of the Italy Women’s National Championships!!

The Milan CC

Milan Cricket Club is a hospitable and friendly club which has been around for the past 40 years. The teams, made up of cricketers of all abilities and nationalities, meld together to form, on occasion, a formidable unit.
The club thrives on a great atmosphere with lots of humour. We play in Milan, but also  spend much of our time playing matches away from home in locations such Varese and Lodi in our home region of Lombardy, Northern Italy, or further afield in France and Switzerland. We also welcome touring clubs!
